There has been a growing trend of brands creating modest collections. It has been really great to see brands take note of the modest consumer but their focus has been limited. So far every brand has focused on Muslim women in the Middle East. DKNY, Tommy Hilfiger, and Zara have all created limited time modest collections for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
While we are excited to see Mango release a 45 piece collection of looser tunics, flowing jackets and kaftans, we wish they had a better understanding of the modest market. So many of the pieces in Ramadan 2016 collections have slits and are sleeveless that it indicates a lack of real engagement with the modest and Muslim women. This promoted our co-founder, Zahra Aljabri, to publish an critique in Refinery29 of "Ramadan" collections and that brands should create 'Modest Collections instead.
